Back-priming is unglamorous and it roughly doubles how long the repair lasts. Most rot in this city starts on the hidden face.
Do not let anybody cut vents into a historic cornice as a shortcut, either. Round soffit vents drilled through a molded profile look exactly as bad as they sound, they usually open into a blocked cavity that goes nowhere, and they buy you almost no intake area for the damage done. If the eave cannot be ventilated without wrecking it, ventilate the gables instead.
On newer Northland houses none of this applies and we say so plainly. There, aluminum over sound wood is the right call: it keeps paint, it dents rather than splits under hail, and somebody can peel it back years later to check the board. Vinyl soffit is fine on a low eave and goes brittle and yellow on a two-story west elevation, so exposure decides that one rather than budget.
